~Itinerary~
Sunday, November 19, 2006
Miami, USA
Gather this evening at the Miami International Airport for your flight to Santiago. (Meals aloft)
Monday, November 20
Santiago, Chile
Upon arrival in Santiago, transfer to our hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing or sightseeing in Chile’s cosmopolitan capital city. Enjoy lunch in the hotel’s restaurant. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel Plaza San Francisco.
Tuesday, November 21
Santiago / Ushuaia, Argentina
After breakfast, fly to Ushuaia and embark the Clipper Adventurer in the world’s southernmost town. We set sail this evening for the Antarctic Peninsula.
Wednesday & Thursday, November 22 & 23
At Sea
As the Clipper Adventurer heads south, lecturers introduce us to the history, geology, and wildlife of the Antarctic Peninsula and its surrounding islands. On deck keep a lookout for wandering and black-browed albatross as well as the whales that are often seen in these waters.
Friday – Tuesday, November 24 – 28
Antarctic Peninsula
We cruise the waters of the Antarctic Peninsula and its adjacent islands, making landings each day. Weather and ice conditions determine our daily schedules; thus, flexibility on this expedition is a must. If the weather is in our favor, we may make a landing before breakfast or even after dinner. Though the expeditionary nature of our voyage precludes guaranteeing specific stops, we plan to visit the following islands, bays, and coves:
Port Lockroy, Neumeyer Channel Lemaire Channel and Pleneau Island Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay Cuverville Island Hannah Point, Livingston Island Deception Island Paulet Island / Antarctic Sound
Wednesday, November 29
Elephant Island
We arrive this morning at Elephant Island, made famous by the Shackleton expedition.
It was here Shackleton’s men camped for 137 days after crossing the open ocean in lifeboats. As we approach the island and see how the steep slopes of rock and ice meet turquoise waters, our admiration of Shackleton and his men increases. We plan to make an expedition stop on the island to view the large numbers of chinstrap penguins that occupy its lower slopes.
Thursday, November 30
Cruising the South Scotia Sea
Our lecturers recap our experiences in Antarctica as we make our way to the Falklands. Join our naturalists on deck in search of the marine mammals and seabirds that flourish in these nutrient-rich waters, a result of the Antarctic Convergence.
Friday, December 1
Sea Lion Island, Falkland Islands
Lying off the south coast of East Falkland Island, Sea Lion Island provides a final opportunity to view the wildlife of the southern oceans. Elephant seals and sea lions haul out on the beach as we come ashore. Hundreds of gentoo penguins nest with their chicks or make their way to and from the ocean. The island is also home to rockhopper penguins, and we watch these birds as they land on wave-swept ledges or launch themselves into the surging surf. We also see Magellanic penguins, striated caracaras, king cormorants, and kelp gulls.
Saturday, December 2
Stanley
We arrive in Stanley, where we disembark the Clipper Adventurer. The buildings and streets of the charming capital of the Falklands recall those of Victorian England, and we have time to shop for Falkland Islands woolen sweaters, stamps, or books before transferring to the airport for the flight to Santiago, connecting to Miami.
Sunday, December 3
Miami
Early-morning arrival in Miami to connect with homeward flights.
