American Orient Express
Great Northwest & Rockies
July 11-17, 2006
With IRT host Karl Zimmermann
If you’d like to explore Seattle’s old-fashioned waterfront trolley, regional train system, or see the Talgo train that calls here, please ask for pretour nights at Seattle’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel upon booking. This is one of the train’s most popular itineraries, so book early!
Tuesday, July 11 — Seattle, Washington / Board the American Orient Express (D)
In the early afternoon at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle, join us for a welcome orientation and to meet our host, Karl Zimmermann, lecturer and rail historian. This afternoon we board the American Orient Express and begin our journey east.
Wednesday, July 12 — Glacier National Park (B, L, D)
Glacier National Park was established at the height of romantic rail travel, and we roll into the park much as passengers did in 1913, when the train station was built. Today we journey along the scenic Going-to-the-Sun Highway. We lunch at the Snowgoose Grille at St. Mary's Lodge, then re-board. Relax as our train follows the south rim of the park.
Thursday, July 13 — Helena, Montana (B, L, D)
Awaken to scenes of rugged countryside, the Rockies, open range and picturesque towns such as Missoula. Indulge in the train’s amenities today as we ride southeast to Helena. Enjoy a lecture and afternoon tea onboard. Dinner is served this evening in the dining cars.
Friday, July 14 — Helena, Montana (B, L, D)
Today, we’ll learn about the historic city of Helena by touring its capital building and the Montana Historical Society Museum. We return to the train for lunch, then head for Holter Lake, a reservoir on the Missouri River. Here we board a boat for a cruise to Gates of the Mountain—1,200-foot limestone cliffs named by Lewis and Clark.
Saturday, July 15 — Yellowstone National Park (B, L, D)
Bears, bald eagles and herds of bison and elk inhabit the two million acres of protected land at Yellowstone National Park. Today, our guide leads us to the Fountain Paint Pots and Old Faithful—where we enjoy a picnic lunch—and finally to West Thumb Geyser Basin. Finally, we journey to West Thumb Geyser Basin. Afterwards, we check into a nearby lodge for dinner and overnight.
Sunday, July 16 — Grand Teton National Park (B, L, D)
This morning we explore the Teton Mountains—perhaps the most majestic and breathtaking in America, with Grand Teton towering at 13,770 feet. We explore Jenny Lake and the Church of the Transfiguration, a rustic log chapel. There is an optional scenic float trip (please book ahead) on the Snake River. After free time in Jackson, we transfer back to the train to enjoy our farewell cocktail reception and dinner.
Monday, July 17 — Salt Lake City (B)
Our American Orient Express adventure ends midmorning after breakfast. Stay in Salt Lake City or return home in the late afternoon.
