 Independent Pre-tour Option: July 29-August 1

Royal Hudson Steam Train

Day 1 Saturday July 29

Arrive at Vancouver International Airport on individual flights and head to our downtown 4-star hotel for check-in. You're on your own to explore Vancouver, its fine public transportation system and its beautiful gardens, Queen Elizabeth Park, Stanley Park, Old World Gastown and Chinatown. Vancouver is a great city full of flowers, beautiful parks large and small, fountains and great restaurants. Tonight enjoy one of these restaurants on your own, as you stroll past some lovely fountains and gardens to Robson Street, the heart of the city. Our hotel, an IRT favorite, has great food and service and a great location near the center of town.
Overnight, Vancouver, Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel

Day 2 Sunday July 30 L
Today transfer independently to BC Rail Station in North Vancouver. You will board the special parlor car of the Royal
Hudson Steam Train and head up the Howe Sound to the tiny logging town of Squamish. The Royal Hudson is named for its steam locomotive, Royal Hudson No. 2860. In 1939, when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth traveled from Quebec City to Vancouver, their train was pulled by Hudson locomotive No. 2850. King George was so impressed with it, he gave permission to its builder to designate that model as "The Royal Hudson." Only 15 were built. The special parlour car is a former California Zephyr dome coach with a dining room at one end and a lounge at the other. While you're admiring the view, enjoy a 3-course gourmet lunch. Upon arrival, the stay in Squamish is long enough to look around or visit the West Coast Railway Museum. Departure is about  2 p.m. Have dessert in the parlor car on your return. Transfer independently back to the hotel.
Overnight, Vancouver, Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel

Day 3 Monday July 31
This morning enjoy a sightseeing tour of Vancouver by motor coach. In the afternoon you're on your own to explore.  Take a ride up the gondola of Grouse Mountain, enjoy a gourmet meal in the Dining Car Restaurant, highly recommended by all IRT members who have sampled it. Sample all sorts of transportation here: ferries, streetcars, buses, trolley-buses, the Skytrain, and suburban trains all part of Vancouver's famous mass transportation system.

Canadian Rockies by Rail
Main Tour
August 1-8, 2000

Day 1 August 1 Tuesday D
Upon arrival in this first-class city, one of our favorites in the entire world, make your way to the Pacific Central Station for check-in on the legendary Canadian, VIA Rail's flagship train. Meet your tour leader, George Drury, and fellow Society members on the tour at the station by about 4:30 p.m. Today you will discover for yourself why IRT's editors have chosen the Canadian twice as one of the top rail experiences in the world. We will use the top class of service-Silver and Blue Class Service-on the Canadian. Check-in starts about 5 p.m.

We'll have plenty of time to settle into our wonderful bedrooms before our celebratory welcome dinner. And dinner in this beautiful diner is an experience in itself, a highlight of the trip, with its subtle beauty, pink and white linens, mirrors and golden glow of subdued lighting. Full-length glass panels are etched with images of chickadees, kingfishers and other birds. The menu is delicious and varied - our last group was treated to veal chop, breast of duck, grilled Arctic  char with duchess potatoes, sautéed strips of zucchini and sweet red pepper. Rich desserts top off the meal. After this elegant dinner, perhaps you may have a drink in the Park Car for more time to chat with other IRT members. As we settle into our compartments, relax and enjoy the beautiful ride; we will sleep like babies on this great train.
Overnight, VIA Rail's Canadian, Silver & Blue Class Service

Day 2, Wednesday August 2 B, L, D
Today, we'll enjoy breakfast in the diner as we travel deep into the heart of the Canadian Rockies to Jasper. We will pass Pyramid Falls, the Albreda Icefields and Mount Robson, the tallest mountain in the Canadian Rockies at nearly 13,000 feet. Jasper is one of Canada's largest National Parks, known particularly for its wildlife such as elk, bear and moose. And every time IRT members have traveled there, we have had exciting sightings of each!

After lunch on board, we arrive at Jasper VIA Rail Station and travel by way of chartered motor coach to our hotel for check-in. This afternoon, you'll have plenty of time to walk along the lake or take a ride on horseback. Our accommodations: the famous Jasper Park Lodge. We will have dinner in the beautiful dining room tonight. The lodge itself is like a small community, a place of rustic beauty where guests stay in small houses dispersed around the property  and participate in as many activities as you choose.
Overnight, Jasper, Jasper Park Lodge

Day 3 Thursday August 3 B, D
Today, after enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will take a trip to Maligne Lake, known as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. We will cruise toward the south end of this picture-postcard setting, allowing you plenty of time to marvel at the magnificent shoreline with dense forests and glacial peaks rising abruptly from the water's edge. Stop at Spirit Island for the chance to take photographs of the lake. After returning to the hotel, enjoy the afternoon at your leisure. There is lots to discover in Jasper. Enjoy dinner at the hotel.
Overnight, Jasper, Jasper Park Lodge.

Day 4, Friday, August 4 B, L, D
Today, we take an unforgettable trip past rushing waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, emerald lakes, alpine meadows and snow-capped peaks - with plenty of chances to take in the spectacular view. We will ride the Snocoach, an enclosed, heated vehicle with huge tires, out onto the Columbia Icefield on the Athabasca Glacier. Dress warmly if you want to get out. Last time we were there, we took little cups to drink the blue water, said to be a fountain of youth. Several members have said this was an unexpected highlight of their journey.

Enroute, we will have a box lunch, provided by the Jasper Park Lodge. Later, we will arrive at Lake Louise, with its famous Chateau in a stunning mountain setting by a blue glacial lake. You will have time to stroll around the lake or the public areas of the Chateau. Later, we will re-board our motorcoach for our ride to Banff, just an hour away, for checking in at our hotel. The Rimrock Resort, with its magnificent views and frequent visits by wildlife, is the only five-star hotel in the Rockies.
Overnight, Banff, The Rimrock Hotel

Day 5, Saturday, August 5 B
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, you have the rest of the day to explore this incredible area. Shop at the village of Banff. Take a tour back to Lake Louise -- when we went, we just had to return  for a longer visit. Take a tour to Yoho National Park, to Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake and the Spiral Tunnels - through which we'll travel when we take the Rocky Mountaineer. Visit the famous, palatial Banff Springs Hotel. Take a ride on the gondola to the peak of Sulphur Mountain, with 360-degree panoramic views.
Overnight, Banff, The Rimrock Hotel

Day 6 Sunday August 6 B, L

Today we take the famous Rocky Mountaineer; you'll discover why IRT's editors have also chosen this train- twice-for their list of the top 20 rail experiences in the world.

In the Rocky Mountaineer's RedLeaf Service, you will be escorted to your assigned seat on the train. You will luxuriate in the great service, delicious food and wonderful sights you will see from your comfortable, fully reclining seat out the large picture windows of your car. On these cars, forward-facing seats are able to rotate to accommodate groups of four. Along the way, experienced guides tell much about the scenery, the wildlife and geological features you will admire.

We will enjoy both a delicious breakfast and lunch aboard the Rocky Mountaineer.

Today, we travel by daylight to the tiny town of Kamloops, where we will overnight. We travel through Yoho, Glacier National Parks and the famous Spiral Tunnels. We will pass over so many rivers and high trestle bridges, it's almost impossible to count. The sights are spectacular. You will discover why so many call the Canadian Rockies some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

Tonight, we'll arrive in Kamloops and check into our hotel. Enjoy optional dinner under a lively tent-with a buffet dinner and musical revue celebrating the era when the first passenger train arrived in Kamloops. Overnight, Kamloops, Hotel to be announced by The Rocky Mountaineer

Day 7, Monday August 7 B, L
Transfer via motorcoach back to the rail station for your second day on board The Rocky Mountaineer. Soon after departure, a delicious breakfast will be served. Today, our steward will help us look for birds, animals, and famous sites such as Hell's Gate, where millions of gallons of water per minute rush through the narrowest point of the Fraser Canyon. We will travel out of the mountains, past the final range, the Pacific Coast Mountains, over a desert, and arrive in Vancouver around 4:35 p.m. We're confident you will share George Drury's opinion at the end of his last Canadian Rockies by Rail tour: "We left the train with regret -one of the best train rides in the world was over." We will transfer to the hotel, where we overnight. Overnight, Vancouver, Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel

Day 8, Tuesday August 8 B

Today after a delicious full breakfast at the hotel, we say good-bye to one another and beautiful Canada until the next time! Make your own way to the international airport  for departure.  Independent Post-Tour Journey: August 8-15

Cariboo Prospector, Skeena, Malahat Dayliner, Victoria
Day 1, Tuesday August 8 B

If you're staying for the add-on, you're on your own today after breakfast for exploring or resting. Great adventures abound: all the myriad forms of transportation are here, including the suburban trains. Be sure to rest up for the start of your rail adventure tomorrow. Dine on your own today after the included breakfast. Overnight, Vancouver, Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel

Day 2, Wednesday August 9 B, L, D

It's up early for the Cariboo Prospector, BC Rail's main passenger service. We will again have breakfast on board, and follow the path of the Royal Hudson up the coast along the Howe Sound, and continue on to Cheakamus Canyon with its spectacular view from the bridge, past Brandywine Falls into Whistler. We will be traveling on 1955 refurbished Budd Dayliner cars, with friendly and attentive service. On-board hosts provide commentary, tell stories and point out significant landmarks. Hot meals -- breakfast, lunch and dinner -- will be served at seat as you pass through the dynamic, ever-changing incredible scenery of this train ride. And we are heading to the interior hub city of Prince George, where we will overnight. Overnight, Prince George, Ramada Hotel

Day 3, Thursday August 10 B, L, D

Today we travel the famous Skeena Line from Prince George west to the coast port of Prince Rupert where you will enjoy all this colorful city has to offer. The Skeena, whose schedule was modified in 1996 to take in the daylight hours, is now a very popular train. The trip runs 725 miles between the town of Jasper to Prince Rupert, just south of Alaska. The mid-point stop in Prince George, B.C., is where we pick up the Skeena. This train travels year-round, crossing the Rockies and skirting the Fraser and Bulkley Rivers. It follows the Skeena River, its namesake, for more than 150 miles. It passes the sheer cliffs of the Coast Range. And rivers, lakes, waterfalls and forest dominate the scene. We may even see the dramatic peaks of the Seven Sisters at Kitwanga. We are booked in Totem Class Service, which includes three meals served at seat along with access to the Dome and lounge car. In the evening, we arrive in Prince Rupert, known for halibut fishing, wildlife viewing and an excellent collection of native totem poles. Overnight, Prince Rupert, The Crest Hotel

Day 4, Friday August 11 B, L, D
Today is our leisurely voyage south on the "Queen of the North" through the spectacular Inside Passage. During the voyage, look for whales, bald eagles diving for food, fishing villages, mountains and old lumber mills along the route.  We pass by beautiful islands. During the all-day journey, relax or sleep in your Promenade Cabin, with separate toilet and sink. It has an upper and lower bunk; we have reserved one for you because they are in short supply. In the late evening, we arrive in the small fishing community of Port Hardy at the northern tip of Vancouver Island for an overnight stay in your hotel.
Overnight, Port Hardy, The Glen Lyon Inn

Day 5, Saturday August 12
Today, take a motorcoach from Port Hardy to Courtenay, the terminus for VIA Rail's Malahat Dayliner. While others may choose to travel by motorcoach to Victoria, most Society members want to sample the Malahat Dayliner, which the Vancouver Island residents have bravely fought to keep. So far, they've been successful, and it's gaining in popularity all the time. In order to take this little train, an overnight in Courtenay is required. There is plenty to explore in the area and plenty of time to rest up from your rail journeys.
Overnight, Courtenay, The Coast Westerly Hotel

Day 6, Sunday August 13
Relax this morning, and enjoy plenty of time for exploring the area before departure today at 5:15 p.m. on the Malahat Dayliner. Arrival in Victoria  is 9:40 p.m. This train is virtually unknown outside the Vancouver Island communities it services-except to IRT members-but it is a special treat for railfans and tourists alike. It is officially called the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway, and it penetrates verdant forest, parallels bays, inlets and lakes, and for brief moments, flusters a wide assortment of animal life wandering along its single track. This route is 140 miles long, and uses Budd RDCs (rail diesel cars) called Dayliners. They are over 40 years old, but comfortable  and modern, with huge picture windows, carpeting, reclining seats, adjustable footrests and tray tables.  Upon arrival, transfer on your own to your hotel for your overnight stay.
Overnight, Victoria, The Royal Scot Inn

Day 7, Monday August 14
Today take a Victoria  city tour (1 1/2 hours) and enjoy a visit to the world-famous Butchart Gardens (3 hours).  You will be picked up at the hotel. Take both tours this day-or use one of your vouchers for the city tour today, and go to the gardens tomorrow. Afternoon  is on your own. Wonderful sites abound, including the nearby museum, the docks, the shops and simply the streets of Victoria, the most British of cities in North America. It's also fun and elegant to have tea at the Empress Hotel. Reservations suggested.
Overnight, Victoria, The Royal Scot Inn

Day 8, Tuesday August 15
Today, you may leave anytime you like. Sail on BC Ferries through the spectacular Active Pass. Return to Vancouver via Pacific Coach Lines which will take you to Vancouver's Central Pacific Terminal on Station Street. Departures are on the even hours daily, starting at 6 a.m.; the last departure is 8 p.m. From Victoria  to Vancouver takes about 3 1/2 hours. Upon arrival in Vancouver, continue on home or to your own arrangements in the region. Bon Voyage!

Right away, your attendants start to pamper you.
