Eastbound Itinerary

Exclusive IRT-only pretour: Join Karl Zimmermann Sept. 22 on a tour of the streetcars of San Francisco. No additional charge if booked on the Sept. 22-28 departure.

Day 1: Oakland, California (D)

Board the GrandLuxe Express in the late afternoon. Enjoy festivities in the bar as you start your journey. Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 2: Napa Valley, California (B, L, D)
Arrive beautiful wine country. Lunch in the Cask Room Cellar at Merryvale Winery, with tables elegantly set with vine-covered candelabras and shimmering crystal in a cobblestone hall lined with wine casks. The three-course lunch is paired with some of Merryvale’s best wines. Tour Napa, including a visit to Copia, the American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts. Return to train for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Lake Tahoe & Sierra Nevada Mountains (B, L, D)
Today enjoy the spectacular ride over Donner Pass and the ascent into the breath-taking Lake Tahoe area. Take a boat cruise on the 1,685-foot deep lake. Re-board the train this afternoon and travel through the Great Salt Lake Desert.

Day 4: Salt Lake City, Utah (B, L, D)
Tour Salt Lake City today. Or, tour surrounding mountain communities, including Sundance Resort. Dinner is served as the train journeys toward Arches & Canyonlands National Parks.

Day 5: Arches & Canyonlands National Parks (B, L, D)

After breakfast on the train, depart by coach for Arches & Canyonlands National Parks—home to the largest concentration of natural sandstone arches in the world. Highlights: Grandview Point and Balanced Rock, a precarious-looking 128-foot tower estimated to weigh more than 3,500 tons. Dinner and overnight on the train.

Day 6: Rail through the Colorado Rockies (B, L, D)
Sit back and enjoy the train in all its glory through some of the country’s most stunning mountain scenery. We follow the Colorado River through the renowned Glenwood Canyon. A highlight will be the Moffat Tunnel, one of the most famous railroad tunnels in America, whose six-mile length through the Continental Divide enables trains to bypass 27 miles of difficult railroad. With average daily progress of just 21 feet, the tunnel took four years to bore and was completed in 1928. Arrive Denver this evening, and enjoy a farewell reception and dinner on board.

Day 7: Denver, Colorado (B)

Tour ends after breakfast on board. NEW BONUS! An exclusive tour of the Colorado Railcar Manufacturing Plant will be included for all passengers on eastbound tours! Colorado Railcar builds the world's largest passenger railcars and is the only U.S.-owned manufacturer of new passenger railcars.
