“The E&O is a world of colonial charm and service—antique brass and hand-cut inlaid woods, five-course dinners and afternoon tea in French silver, mingling in the main bar and evening strolls to the observation car to watch the sunset”
— Phoenix Arrien, The International Railway Traveler®

The Itinerary

Bangkok-Singapore (4 Days, 3 Nights)

Day 1: Bangkok
The Eastern & Oriental Express departs Bangkok early evening. Sip a welcome drink and settle into your comfortable private compartment. Dinner is served as the train travels from city into the countryside with its rice-fields, villages and water buffalo. Retire to your compartment, transformed into a cozy bedroom by your steward.

Day 2: Wang Po & River Kwai
Awake early in order not to miss the excitement of the train making its way along the wooden trestle viaduct from Wang Po and on to the River Kwai Bridge station. Disembark for a river cruise on board a local raft, passing under the Bridge. On board, a local historian provides a brief overview of the history of the Thailand-Burma railway and the bridge.

This is followed by a visit to the Thailand-Burman Railway Centre to discover the history of the infamous railway built here during World War II. As you explore the informative museum, the historian is available to answer questions. There is time to visit the Don Rak War Cemetery adjacent to the museum if you wish.

Rejoin the train for lunch and enjoy a relaxing afternoon, dinner and a wonderful night on board, traveling through unforgettable scenery.

Day 3: Penang
After brunch the train arrives into Butterworth. Here coaches take you across to Georgetown, capital of Penang island, on the local ferry. Here you will have a guided tour of colonial Georgetown, with pre-World War II mosques, elaborately roofed temples, churches, bazaars and colorful shophouses.

Return to the train and spend the afternoon watching the passing scenery from the open-air deck of the observation car. Enjoy a fabulous dinner in one of the opulent restaurant cars, then spend a relaxing evening in the bar car with its resident pianist.

Day 4: Singapore
After breakfast, soon it’s time to leave the train, having crossed the Straits of Johor into Singapore.

Singapore-Bangkok (3 Days, 2 Nights)

Day 1: Singapore
Depart Singapore early afternoon, savoring the fascinating scenery of rural Malaysia, then dress for the evening and enjoy an aperitif as the resident pianist plays in the bar car, before dinner is served. The train then pulls into the magnificent domed station at Kuala Lumpur for a brief stop. Retire to your cabin, which has been transformed into a bedroom by your steward.

Day 2: Penang
Enjoy breakfast in your cabin before arriving in Butterworth late morning. Disembark for a visit to Penang Island for a relaxed guided tour of colonial Georgetown. Return to the train and enjoy lunch as you leave northern Malaysia for the rice paddy fields of Thailand. Relax with an aperitif in the Observation Car as the sun goes down, before dinner and a final night on board.

Day 3: River Kwai & Bangkok
Arrive at the River Kwai Bridge station, where you disembark for a river cruise on board a local barge, followed by a visit to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre to discover the history of this infamous World War II railway. Rejoin the train for lunch, and relax on board until it pulls into Bangkok that afternoon.
