Trains:  Danube Express
10-day Escorted Tour

Tour Type:  First-Class

The Tour

Travel aboard the first-class Danube Express across eastern Europe. Journey from Istanbul to Prague, including three nights in lovely Budapest. Explore Transylvania, Vienna, Bratislava and Krakow and more, with six nights on board the comfortable, all en-suite Danube Express train.

The Itinerary

Day 1: Istanbul
Check in for your Danube Express journey at Istanbul’s Sirkeci station this afternoon. The Danube Express follows the Bosphorus as you settle in to your compartment. Enjoy a drink in the lounge before dinner during the journey to the Bulgarian border.

Day 2: Kazanlak & Veliko Turnovo
A tour from Kazanlak includes the Shipka Memorial Church and a 4th-century BC Thracian tomb. During lunch, the train climbs the scenic Shipka pass. In Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria’s ancient capital, houses perch above the Yantra River. Stroll the narrow streets and visit medieval Tsarevets Castle. Dine on board as the train heads for Romania.

Day 3: Brasov and Sighisoara
Wake amidst the dramatic Carpathian Mountains. Arrive in Braşov and visit Dracula's (Bran) Castle in its stunning mountain setting. Enjoy lunch during the journey to medieval Sighişoara, rumored birthplace of Dracula. Meander the cobbled streets passing well-preserved buildings on a walking tour. Enjoy dinner en route to the Hungarian border.

Day 4: Kecskemét and Budapest
Continuing across the Northern Plain, arrive in Kecskemét with free time to explore. Later, at Lajosmizse, a thrilling “Puszta” show demonstrates great horsemanship. Lunch is served on board en route to Budapest, arriving at Nyugati station mid-afternoon. Transfer for three nights at the centrally located Hotel Astoria (4-star).

Days 5 & 6: Budapest
Two days at leisure in Budapest to explore and discover the two halves of the city, Buda and Pest. Perhaps you will opt for a cruise on the Danube.

Day 7: Budapest & Keszthely
Mid-morning reception in the Royal Waiting Room at Budapest Nyugati station before boarding the Danube Express. Lunch is served as the train heads south west and skirts the southern shore of Lake Balaton. Arriving in Keszthely at the western end of the Lake, there is a visit to the Baroque Festetics Palace, one of the largest in Hungary.  During dinner, the train continues towards the Austrian border.

Day 8: Vienna & Bratislava
Wake near Vienna and after breakfast, a tour of this dazzling city takes you along the Ringstrasse past such architectural gems as the State Opera, the Hofburg, Parliament, City Hall, National Theatre and Votive Church, as well as many beautiful parks. The highlight is a visit to Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Hapsburgs. Back on board, lunch is served as the train heads towards Slovakia and crosses the Danube. In Bratislava, the capital city, a tour will include the Old Town and the stunning castle perched high above the city on a hill overlooking the Danube. Later, relax with a drink before dinner as the journey continues through the attractive mountain scenery of the Slovakian countryside en route to the Polish border. Dinner on board.

Day 9: Krakow & Wieliczka
Arrive in Krakow where a morning tour evokes a colorful past and includes the Old Town, with its medieval Market Square and magnificent Cloth Hall as well as Wawel Castle. In St. Mary’s Church, see the elaborate ornamentation and gilded gothic altarpiece by Veit Stoss. After lunch in a local restaurant, travel by coach to Wieliczka to visit one of the world’s oldest salt mines, operational from medieval times until the end of the 20th century. Now a World Heritage site, its galleries display artworks sculpted in the salt. During dinner, the Danube Express heads west towards the Czech border and overnight to Prague.
