The Tour

This 10-day independent rail vacation is a fabulous way for friends and family to explore American heritage together in comfort and ease. Visit  some of the most interesting and historic cities in the United States: New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. This tour allows many luxurious hours to relax on the trains and plenty of time to sightsee. Discover the excitement of New York, with its museums, theater and shopping; explore the charming city of Boston — the gateway to New England; relive American history in Philadelphia; and visit Washington's many museums showcasing our nation's political past and present. This itinerary invites you to celebrate the American way of life at your pace. And leave the driving to Amtrak! Whether you choose the Northeast Regional or Acela Express, this trip is sure to be memorable.

The Itinerary

(Note: Unless designated "included," all activities described in this itinerary are suggestions only. Itinerary can be done in reverse order. Extra nights can be added in any city for additional charge. Please inquire about additional extensions.)

Day 1: Arrive & Explore New York City
This evening, begin your independent rail journey to some of America's top cities any way you wish! You may wish to visit Times Square or view the city from atop the Empire State Building. You may also wish to book tickets to one of the many famous Broadway shows as a start to your vacation. (Let us know if we can arrange your tickets.) (Overnight in NYC)

Day 2: New York City Exploring
Enjoy the sights and sounds of Manhattan on a hop-on/hop-off tour via double-decker bus (included). Also included is a CityPass which admits you to several famous New York City attractions, including the American Museum of Natural History, Museum of Modern Art, Empire State Building, the Guggenheim Museum and more. (Overnight in NYC)

Day 3: New York City Exploring

Enjoy more of the city’s attractions, or explore the many shops and boutiques for which New York City is famous. In the evening, enjoy a delightful meal at the View Restaurant (included). (Overnight in NYC)

Day 4: New York City to Boston
This morning, travel by Amtrak's Northeast Regional (or upgrade to Acela Express) to the charming city of Boston. The remainder of the day is free for you to experience “Beantown’s” colonial charm and rich history. In the evening, you may choose to board the Spirit of Boston for a relaxing dinner cruise. (Overnight in Boston)

Day 5: Boston Exploring
Explore Boston aboard an Old Town Trolley Tour (included). A CityPass of Boston is also included, providing  access to the Museum of Science, New England Aquarium, Skywalk Observatory, Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard Museum of Natural History and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum. (Overnight in Boston)

Day 6: Boston to Philadelphia
Early morning, board Amtrak's Northeast Regional for your journey to Philadelphia. The birthplace of American independence and home of the Liberty Bell, Philadelphia offers a wide selection of attractions, culture, entertainment and great restaurants. (Overnight in Philadelphia)

Day 7: Philadelphia Exploring
You have the entire day to discover Philadelphia’s unique attractions. The Philadelphia CityPass (included) gives you hop-on/hop-off privileges for 24 hours on the touring trolleys and buses; admission to the Philadelphia Zoo, The Franklin Institute, the National Constitution Center and more. (Overnight in Philadelphia)

Day 8: Philadelphia to Washington, DC
Departing Philadelphia by Amtrak, you will travel to Washington, D.C., the capital city of the United States. First you'll arrive at the magnificent Union Station. This evening, enjoy Italian specialties at your included dinner at Finemondo. (Overnight in DC)

Day 9: Washington, DC, Exploring
Take the day to discover Washington’s many highlights on a step-on/step-off Old Town Trolley (included). A must-visit is the International Spy Museum, where hands-on exhibits help uncover the life of a spy! Admission is included.(Overnight in DC)

Day 10: Vacation Ends in New York City

Spend the morning sightseeing before you board the Northeast Regional (or Acela Express for an upgrade) back to New York City. Depart for home from New York City.
