New Danube Express & Uniworld Pairings Make for Perfect European Jaunts

By Rachel M. Hardy

Sometimes the best way to describe a train journey to the uninitiated is a “cruise on wheels” — a “land cruise.” Like on a ship, you unpack once, see many sights that wouldn’t be possible if you were hoofing it yourself, and enjoy convivial public spaces like the dining and lounge cars.

Due to a fabulous new collaboration between the Golden Eagle Danube Express — one of our longtime World’s Top 25 Trains —and Uniworld River Cruises, one of our great Virtuoso partners, we are excited to announce that you no longer have to choose one or the other mode of travel for your European holiday.

The two luxury travel companies have created two remarkable itineraries — and limited space still remains for 2023.

S.S. Maria Theresa

The 13-day Enchanting Danube & Castles of Transylvania journey begins in Budapest, with one night at a luxury hotel before boarding the Golden Eagle Danube Express for a 4-day roundtrip. After another night spent in Budapest, guests will board the sumptuous S.S. Maria Theresa for the 8-day journey to Passau.

Highlights include a private visit to the Vienna Art History Museum’s legendary collections, and a visit to Bran’s Castle in Romania.

Bran Castle in Romania.

Departure dates are Oct. 10-22, 2023 (Budapest-Passau), and Oct. 8-19, 2023 (Passau-Budapest). Prices begin at $11,278 per person.

The second itinerary offering is a 14-day tour called Milan, Venice and the Swiss Alps. Guests will visit Milan’s famous Duomo before embarking on an intimate tour of the Islands of Venice on the S.S. La Venezia before boarding the Danube Express for a scenic trip through Italy, Slovenia, Austria, and Switzerland. Guests can choose to add a three-day Lugano & Lake Como extension to make their journey even more memorable.

Highlights include a private after-hours visit to St. Mark’s Basilica, and a traditional pletna boat ride across picturesque Lake Bled.

There is just one departure in 2023: September 1-14. (A truncated 12-day iteration of this journey runs from Venice to Zurich and is offered on Sept. 6-17, 2023). Prices begin at $11,198 per person.
