The Itinerary

Day 1: Bangkok
Arrive Bangkok's lovely Mandarin Oriental Hotel for overnight stay in a superior room.

Day 2: Depart Bangkok
Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy a private check-in at the hotel and transfer to the train station to meet the Eastern & Oriental Express. After a welcome reception on board settle in to your private cabin with en-suite facilities. Then enjoy dinner in one of the opulent dining cars.

Day 3: Isan &
 Prasat Sikhoraphum
Following breakfast, you will be escorted to a traditional Isan village to meet the residents. Our expert guides will explain Isan customs and how to show respect. Walking through the village, you will visit the local temple and school, and see women weaving cloth or bamboo mats on home looms. Explore and learn about the complex system of rice cultivation in the verdant rice paddies. In the village you will be invited to participate in the bai sii (sacred thread) ceremony with local elders.

Lunch on board. Late afternoon arrive in the small town of Sikhoraphum where you visit Prasat Sikhoraphum, a beautifully restored 12th-century Khmer temple. Off the beaten track, Prasat Sikhoraphum rarely receives international visitors. It is the perfect, tranquil setting for a sunset cocktail reception this evening. Informal dinner on board in the evening.

Day 4: Phanom Rung
This morning visit Phanom Rung, another majestic and highly revered 12-century Khmer temple, which has been nominated for World Heritage status. After exploring this magnificent complex, visit a nearby village famous for its silk weavers.

Return to the train late morning for an afternoon at leisure on board, watching rural Thailand pass by. Enjoy lunch, dinner and entertainment on board.

Day 5: Chiang Mai
Excursion options in Chiang Mai, including elephant camp, Buddhist temple tour or relaxed afternoon shopping in city's best boutiques. Choices abound, and we can arrange anything you wish. Want to spend the day at a spa? Wish to visit an exclusive Celadon porcelain shop? All excursions include lunch. Informal dinner on board.

Day 6: Lampang
Pony-carriage tour of Lampang, ending at historic Ban Sao Nak, "house of many pillars." Built in 1895 on 116 pillars by a local resident, the house is now a museum. Take a tour of the house and garden, with morning tea before returning to the train.

Lunch is served on board as you travel through the breathtaking countryside. Enjoy the vistas from the open-air observation car, order a sunset cocktail and move to the dining car for another delicious dinner on board.

Day 7: Asoke Valley
Morning guided tour of Khao Yai National Park, home to wild elephants, gibbons, deer and fabulous birds. Lunch and tour at celebrated Gran Monte vineyard in scenic Asoke Valley. Thailand's first female oenologist, Nikki Visootha Lohitnavy, introduces this family-run estate and presents a selection of her wines, followed by a walking tour among the vines.

Back on board, toast a wonderful journey with a farewell cocktail party and dinner on board.

Day 8: Bangkok
Return to Bangkok in the morning and disembark.
